Dialogue 38 – 865 Dundas St. W.
Growing up in Peru, Sofia Escobar was deeply influenced by textiles rich in ancient and cultural legacy. She completed a BFA in Material Art and Design program from OCAD University as well as Diploma of Art and Design at George Brown College. Escobar has a wide range of interests including publication, illustration, and film, and has created notable work in textile art. Her more recent work is showcased at the Gladstone Hotel as part of the Hard Twist Annual Textile Exhibition. Escobar currently lives and works in Toronto where she continues to be inspired by the new processes in the making of textile construction.
The Cube takes inspiration from phenomenological and non-traditional approaches to textiles. It employs light, plastics and projections to communicate the narrative inherent in textile. The repetitive and intricate nature of textile construction is reflected by the excessive labor required to thread each acrylic panel by hand.
