Brothers Dressler (Jason and Lars Dressler) | Mesh Screen TO 02
Location: Fort York Food Bank, 797 Dundas St. W.

Brothers Dressler are twin engineers-turned-designers and material manipulators. Jason and Lars Dressler have been working collaboratively since 2003 to design and build bespoke furnishings, lighting, other objects and custom projects. With a focus on sustainability and an eye to material, process, and craftsmanship, they create custom works and limited edition pieces from their downtown Toronto workshop/studio with a talented group of craftspeople. They use local, reclaimed, found, and responsibly harvested materials, working to promote a return to local manufacturing to make long lasting heirloom pieces. Works are created with material in mind, using as much as possible while giving cut-offs and waste streams new life.

Mesh Screen TO 02 continues an exploration of the utilization of Toronto’s urban wood as part of the Brother’s Cut-ups series which is created from the rerouting of waste streams. Fragments of once-majestic city trees that provided shade, fresh air and inspiration for years are broken down to their individual colour palette to create new patterns and interpretations. TO 01 is the first screen of the series and highlights the plight of Toronto’s Ash trees by mimicking the tunnel patterns of the emerald ash borer larva as they eat away the underlayer of bark on the way to destroying the tree. Nearly all of Toronto’s 860,000 plus Ash trees will be decimated by 2020. That means there is a lot of wood that needs to be used; the city and numerous makers are looking to create life from this dying resource. (Toronto urban Ash wood, bungee cord, metal)
