Location: Hilary’s Pharmacy, 811 Dundas St. W.

Ian Devenney is a designer, carpenter, boatbuilder, educator, recovering academic and pathological dabbler. Ian is the founder of Foxwedge, a Toronto-based furniture design company, that represents a maturation of his design and construction ability. Here, he is dedicated to producing creative and refined studio furniture with flourishes and details not possible in a higher-volume production shop. He is also the lead curator of Digital Promises / Material Presence (digitalpromises.org), a participating show in the upcoming Toronto Design-Offsite Festival.

Cary Sandford is a graduate of Sheridan’s furniture design program, founder of Carleton Design Studio and a principal of ’3 house’, a Toronto-based residential renovations company.

Sandford Coffee and Side Tables are cleverly designed. Together, they form a single coffee table; apart they serve as side tables for a sofa-bed. The tables combine the warmth of solid wood with the refined, industrial edge of minimally-finished bent steel legs. Details like finely chamfered edges and flush-mounted black-oxide bolts, which pass through the steel legs and are threaded directly into the wood, tie the design together in a clean and contemporary package. Look closely and you’ll see that the grain of the wood is oriented in opposite directions in each of the tables, giving the pair a subtly playful feel. (Single block Mahogany, remnant from veneer manufacturing; 3/8″ P&O steel plate; 5/8″ socket-head bolts; post-catalyzed lacquer)
